Yellow and Orange Play Dough with Natural, Homemade Food Coloring

Did you think that homemade colorings would be dull?  Check out this play dough!

 Orange and Yellow

We make our play dough with a basic recipe that my mother originally got from my grandmother, I believe.  We used two different spices to dye them. We prefer to make our own non-toxic food dye.

The color turned out amazing, it’s so easy, and, using the proper method, the spices don’t scent the play dough, allowing you to use your favorite essential oils to scent the play dough if you want. (We used orange and lemon oil. They smell so yummy!)

The instructions for extracting the clear, colored liquid from the spices is given in my post on DIY Non-Toxic Food Coloring.

Once you have your clear, colored liquid from the spices, pour it into a clear measuring cup, and add a bit of water until you have the amount of liquid you need to make the following recipe.

Homemade colorings are anything but boring. These play dough turned out with incredible colors. And with a few drops of essential oil added, they provided a sensory-explosion experience.
Ingredients
  • 1 cups flour (white flour will be smoothest)
  • ½ cup salt (use a fine-grain salt and not chunky sea-salt)
  • 1 cups water (the strained, colored liquid - instructions at homesteadandgardens.com)
  • 1 Tbsp. oil
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • Paprika or Ground Red Pepper
  • A few drops of orange or lemon essential oil (optional - adds an amazing sensory experience)
Instructions
  1. Put a tablespoon or so of paprika or ground red pepper in a heat-safe glass container. Add a tablespoon or two of water, and heat in the microwave or in a double boiler. (It doesn't take very long - just enough to incorporate the spices better in the water, and to start to extract the color. Like making a cup of tea.)
  2. Strain it through a fine-woven cloth (I use kitchen muslin) and you should have a clear liquid. If you see tiny solids still in it, strain it one more time.
  3. Once you have your clear, colored liquid, pour it into a clear measuring cup, and add a bit of water until you have the amount of liquid you need.
  4. Combine the strained liquid with the flour, salt, oil, and cream of tartar in a pan. Place over medium low heat and stir until a ball forms. Remove from the heat, scoop it out onto a piece of tin foil, and allow the dough to cool.
  5. Knead a little bit when cool and the play dough is ready for the kids.
  6. I added some essential oils at the end to give an even greater sensory experience.

Stir the ingredients really well so you get a smooth playdough patty.

After only a couple of minutes, the ingredients will come together in a mass. Immediately remove it from the heat, scoop it out with a spoon onto some tin foil. Allow it to cool a bit, then knead it a few times.

Voila. Home made play dough.

It only takes 5-6 minutes to make each play dough patty.  Less than an hour will give you a rainbow of naturally-dyed homemade sensory play dough!
